The history of lipstick goes back thousands of years. How do we know? Historical pictures and paintings tell the story. An ancient manual dating back to the 13th century BC, The Grolier Codex, shows two Mayan woman wearing lipstick. There are three main civilizations that are said to have contributed significantly to the history of lip color products.
Ancient Sumerians (5,000 years ago)
Ancient Sumerians were possibly the first to invent and wear lipstick, about 5,000 years ago. If we were to replicate their formula today, most people probably wouldn’t be able to afford it except on very special occasions. The Sumerians actually crushed precious gemstones and decorated their faces, mainly on the lips and around the eyes.
Indus Valley Civilization (4,500-5,000 years ago)
Women in the ancient Indus Valley Civilization around 3000 BC to 1500 BC, applied red-tinted lipstick to their lips. This civilization lived mainly in the northwestern regions of southern Asia extending from what today is northeast Afghanistan to Pakistan, and northwest India. Along with ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, it was one of three early civilizations of the Old World.
Ancient Egypt (circa 3100 B.C. to 332 B.C.)
Egyptians like Cleopatra crushed bugs to create a color of red on their lips. They wore lipstick to show social status rather than gender. It wasn’t always such a good thing. The red dye they extracted from seaweed often resulted in serious illness. Lipsticks with shimmering effects were initially made using a substance found in fish scales.
When was Solid lipstick Invented?
It was during the Islamic Golden Age that cosmetologist Abu-al-Qasim Zarhawi invented the first solid lipsticks. Perfumed sticks were rolled and pressed in special molds. Cosmetic companies worldwide have taken it from there.
