Tooth sensitivity causes a great deal of discomfort. It can also be extremely painful. Anyone who suffers from tooth sensitivity will tell you that often it affects eating and drinking. There are many possible causes. Here are 6 of them:
Here are 6 of them:
- Tooth Decay
- Fractured Teeth
- Gum Disease
- Exposed Tooth Root
- Worn-down Fillings
- Worn Tooth Enamel
When your teeth are healthy, a layer of enamel protects the crowns. This is the part of your tooth that lies above the gum line. A layer called cementum protects the tooth root under the gum line. Beneath the enamel and the cementum is a layer called dentin.
What is Dentin?
Dentin is exposed when gums recede. The result can be hypersensitivity. Dentin contains small hollow tubes or canals and is less dense than enamel and cementum. When enamel or cementum wear away, dentin loses its protective covering. These tubules then allow heat and cold to reach nerves and cells inside the tooth. Acidic or sticky foods can also cause sensitivity.
Can Sensitive Teeth Be Treated?
Yes. The type of treatment is determined based on what is causing the sensitivity. Your dentist may prescribe one of the following treatments:
Fluoride Gel — strengthens enamel and reducing sensations
Root Canal — As a last resort after other treatments have failed, your dentist may suggest a root canal.
Other treatments may include: desensitizing toothpaste, surgical gum graft, or dental repairs such as a crown or dental inlay.
The best way to minimize tooth sensitivity is proper oral hygiene. This is the key to preventing sensitive tooth pain. Always ask your dentist any questions you may have about your daily oral hygiene routine or concerns about tooth sensitivity.
