Eye brows frame our eyes. You’ll get an idea of what we’d look like without them by looking at the most famous portrait in history; that of Mona Lisa. It was the style of the day, and may have been attractive then but not so much today.
There are other reasons eyebrows are important. They keep our eyes a healthy by protecting them from debris. Eyebrows also help to keep moisture out of our eyes when we sweat or walk around the rain.
If we didn’t have eyebrows, our ability to see would be limited. Diverting sweat and dust particles away is also beneficial as the salt in sweat irritates the eyes, making them sting a little.
In ancient Egypt, heavily lined eyes make it necessary to darken eyebrows as well. They were arched and elongated using carbon and other elements. Ancient Greek single women also darkened their eyebrows—and guess what? Back then a uni-brow was a thing of beauty!
Ancient Roman women also preferred the uni-brow look. It was a sign of intelligence could be seen on the most notoriously beautiful women of the time.
Then came the middle ages (1066-1485) and heavily plucked eyebrows. Barely visible, eyebrows were often dyed red honoring Queen Elizabeth.
The Roaring 20s continued this traditional look with needle-thin brows that were often drawn on and extended beyond the corner of the eye. Check out pictures of flappers.
Those who could (after plucking the daylights out of their brows in younger days) wore their brows thinker and less severe in the 1040s. This led to the stronger, highly arched eyebrows of the 50s.
A bold 60s look reverted to the natural look of the 70s; moving right into the bushy browed beauty of the 80s and then the “anything goes” look of the 90s.
