What is Black Friday?
In modern times Black Friday is well known as the busiest shopping day of the year. Retail stores across the country advertise massive deals on merchandise to get shoppers through their doors – and they do!
Unless they’re shopping online, as Whitening Lightning and Gerard Cosmetics customers do, shoppers must brave huge crowds. It’s not uncommon to see people lining up outside major retailers the evening of Thanksgiving to make sure they are the first to get through the door and pick up the best deals on the greatest number of items. Some shoppers even camp out for days prior to the sales. They erect pop-tents and socialize with other bargain-hunters waiting for doors to open.
How did Black Friday get its name? It sounds almost eerie, yet this commercial event has become a widely observed holiday tradition. It is anticipated and celebrated by generations of shoppers all over the US.
There’s a common myth about how Black Friday got its name. According to legend, it’s the day of the year when retailers finally start recording profits after operating at a loss throughout the year. In the past retailers recorded profits in black ink and losses in red, hence the name “black” Friday. However, the origin of the day has another slant.
According to History.com, the first recorded use of the term Black Friday was during a financial crisis in 1869. The crisis was created by two men, Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, buying up large amounts of gold in an attempt to drive up the price, and then selling at a massive profit. Once news of the scheme was out, the stock market plunged and people all over the US, from farmers to business moguls, were ruined.
Ninety years later the term Black Friday was used by Philadelphia police to describe the bedlam that took place on the Friday after Thanksgiving, but it had nothing to do with shopping. Instead, multitudes of suburbanites would make their way into the city for the annual Saturday football game between the Army and Navy. The Philadelphia police force worked extended hours; stretched to the limit trying to contain the immediate explosion in the city’s population.
By the late 1980s the term Black Friday was re-associated with shopping. Recession-era retailers circulated the myth in advertising campaigns in order to boost business the Friday after Thanksgiving – and it would appear they were overwhelmingly successful! We still uphold the tradition and we anticipate it every year.
Many retailers participate in the tradition by offering sale items and discounts on Black Friday. In fact, Whitening Lightning is offering 75% off all home teeth whitening products through Monday and Gerard Cosmetics Is celebrating Black Friday with 45% off.
