Breaking bad habits isn’t easy, and creating new habits can be equally challenging. Today Gerard Cosmetics discusses how to do both.
Define the Problem
If you are concerned about a habit being counterproductive, think about why it might be so. Define the problem by asking yourself what’s going on now. How is it hurting you?
Gerard Cosmetics suggests you define the problem before you contemplate changing it. Instead of jumping in head first, spend about a week observing your behavior.
Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
- Specifically, what is the bad habit you want to change?
- How do you feel when you are doing it or right afterward?
- Are there certain behaviors or emotions that bring it on?
- Why do you want to break this habit?
After you have determined that changing the habit is important and you see how holding onto it impacts your quality of life set a goal to make the switch–find a GOOD habit to replace it with.
Most of us can set verbal goals, or goals that live in our heads. But it makes a HUGE difference if you allow yourself to FEEL the goal in your body.
Visualize what your life will be like when you break the habit.
What will your life look like? Will your relationships change once the old habit is broken?

What will it feel like? Will you be excited? Calm?
Sit with those emotions for some time every day. Conjure them up so that you begin to adopt the motivation for change throughout your body and mind.
What is another habit you can replace the unwanted habit with?
This is all very powerful AND DOABLE when you put your mind to it. If you want to crush a habit, be sure you have something to put in its place and it becomes easier yet. Create new productive and pleasurable habits and let that put a smile on your face!
