Gerard Cosmetics: The Effects of Pollution and the Sun on Skin

Air pollution and its effects on the planet have been well-known and documented for quite a while. Even still, the effects can sometimes be difficult to see; unless you look in a mirror. Gerard Cosmetics did some research on the effects of pollution and sun on the skin and here’s what we found.

Air pollution is virtually invisible and yet has been known to adversely affect our skin in a variety of ways. It can cause excess dryness, premature aging, eczema and even acne. What exactly is pollution and where does it come from?

Two Major Pollutants

There are two major kinds of pollutants that affect our skin: indoor pollutants and outdoor pollutants. Indoor pollutants are things like the wood preservative creosote, formaldehyde (often used in vinyl flooring) and certain kinds of insulation. Outdoor pollutants include carbon monoxide, particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide. These pollutants and chemicals provide a one-two punch that not only adversely affects our skin, but also deplete the ozone layer, allowing in dangerous UV rays that only make things worse.

As time goes on, the combination of outdoor pollutants and UV rays can rob the skin of oxygen and moisture, causing those who overexpose themselves to suffer from premature aging. Additionally, while the skin is meant to protect your body from things outside it trying to get in, it isn’t impenetrable. Tiny little molecules called free-radicals can be absorbed through the skin and wreak havoc on your body.

City vs Country Dwelling

Those who live in urban areas are far more likely to experience wrinkles and dark spots than their country cousins, according to a study published in The Journal of Investigative Dermatology. While government regulations have done some good with regard to reducing polluting emissions, the air is still far from clean because not all pollutants come from industry. Fires, construction sites and power plants are all responsible for putting harmful chemicals and tiny particles that can damage your skin.

So, when surrounded by pollutants both inside and outside your home, how do you combat the deleterious effects? You can begin by washing it off.

Before you put on your makeup, Gerard Cosmetics suggests using a mildly abrasive cleanser. The same goes for the end of the day. Never go to bed with makeup on. The skin does absorb things, but it happens far slower than if something was taken internally.

Simply washing your face at the end of the day can remove a great deal of particulate matter and polluting chemicals before they even get into your system.

Eat Your Way to Healthy Skin

To stem the tide of cell-damaging free radicals, we need antioxidants. Foods like blueberries, red kidney beans, raspberries, strawberries and pecans are all good sources of antioxidants. So is coffee. As a matter of fact, the power of antioxidants found in coffee is enhanced when you roast the beans. So, those who habitually drink a morning cup of Joe are already a step ahead of the competition.
