Your Teeth: Genes May Cause Periodontal Disease

Science Daily

Science Daily has announced that researchers at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine (CDM) Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) identified 41 master regulator genes that may cause periodontal disease. This is good news for those who suffer from dental issues as well as those who may be dealing with future issues in dental health.

The identification of these genes moves dental science closer toward developing formulas that can be used in treatment of severe periodontitis. These treatments will hopefully be applicable before loss of teeth and bone occurs. Before that, our best line of defense is daily care of our teeth and gums.

There are plenty of reasons to practice good dental hygiene. Brushing daily preserves the health of teeth and gums and is also the best way to combat periodontal disease. Keeping your teeth strong and healthy is worth everything!

Researchers are even looking closely at the association between gum disease and Alzheimers. Our teeth are affected by aging and studies have shown that the inflammation response increases as we age. Over the last 50 or so years, inflammation has been linked to a number of diseases. These diseases are more common in people over age 65. Along with dementia, they include atherosclerosis and osteoarthritis.

Any way you look at it, dental hygiene is important to overall wellness. Make regular appointments with your dentist to ensure dental and gum health. Regular professional cleaning will pick up what is missed by brushing at home.

Infrequent brushing can allow food particles to remain in the mouth and become wedged between teeth and gums. Overnight this food breaks down and in just 48 hours becomes plaque. Gums can become enflamed. The best way to minimize inflammation of the gums is to brush regularly with a soft to medium-soft brush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Use dental floss to clean between teeth and never, ever use metal or hard objects in its place.
