Have you ever felt pain or discomfort when eating an ice cream cone or drinking a cold Coke or Pepsi? Tooth sensitivity can be very painful! If you find yourself wincing when you put something cold in your mouth, or when you brush or floss, you likely have what’s known as tooth sensitivity.
Tooth Sensitivity Ranges in Discomfort Levels
It’s certainly no fun when you’re out for a good time with family or friends and everyone’s enjoying ice cream, a cold soda or coffee and you suddenly find yourself sitting on the sidelines in pain. There are things you can do to lessen your tooth sensitivity and the pain, according to Leslie Seldin, an associate professor of dentistry at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.
Seldin offers some tips that will help make your life a lot less painful:
Are you brushing too hard? You may be brushing with too much force. Are you using a hard-bristled toothbrush? That can do a number on the protective layers of your teeth and wear them down over time. So go easy on the brushing and use a soft toothbrush.
Acidic foods like tomato soup, pickles or lemon grapefruit can create some discomfort. Try to avoid them if possible.
You may be a tooth grinder. Too much gnashing and hashing can wear down the enamel on your teeth and expose the dentin, or middle layer of the teeth, which has hollow tubes leading directly to your nerves. You may want to use a mouth guard when you sleep at night. Ask your dentist.
Did you know using mouthwash too often can also be a problem? Some over-the-counter brands contain alcohol and other chemicals that can make your teeth MORE sensitive.
So there’s your lesson on tooth sensitivity. It’s certainly uncomfortable if you suffer from this condition. But by taking some basic precautions you can help alleviate the problem. You might even be able to eat some ice cream once in awhile!
